Day Four @ MAK

Richard Garriott’s masterpiece, the role-playing game series “Ultima”, cornerstone of the genre, is displayed in a special exhibition. It shows the complex and innovative fusion of narrativity, interaction, personalization, but also graphics development beginning in the 1980s. Visitors can enjoy the precious collectibles until the 10th of November 2013.

Day Three @ MAK

The second main course “Adventure” shows the history of computer based adventure games beginning with Zork, a text-only adventure from the early 1980s and playable on a classic Macintosh computer, over Zauberschloss and Zak McKracken running on a Commodore C64, Zelda on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System to Shen Mue from 1999, which can be played on the SEGA Dreamcast console.

Day Two @ MAK

Thursday was a busy day at EMERGENT<IMG> / Museum Angewandte Kunst. Visitors of all ages were fascinated by the historic computer games and their immersive strength. Some people got stuck in the Great Underground Empire of Zork while others experienced the many ways to die inside Zauberschloss.

The main course “Simulation”, starting with the very first real-time interactive video game from 1958 “Tennis for Two“, shows the history of tennis simulation games until the year 1999. Including Pong in the 1970s, Atari Tennis in the 1980s and Super Tennis in the 1990s the relation of game mechanics, graphics, realism, player perspective and narrativity are investigated.
